Searching for a Civil War Soldier?

Military records, especially pension files, can teach us so much about our Civil War ancestors, and not just their military service. We can often learn a great deal about their personal lives, and frequently find information about their wives, children, friends, pre-war and post-war careers, and so much more.

What an exciting time this is for genealogical research, especially when it comes to searching Civil War military records. Although very few military records can be accessed online. There are many databases, indexes, and other Internet sources which provide important tools, and many new and exciting opportunities for research.

That doesn't mean that the search is always going to be EASY. It may even prove incredibly frustrating at times, but that makes it all the more rewarding when we finally find that missing piece of the puzzle.

This web site will focus on Civil War soldier and sailor research. There are a vast number of related records and Internet sources, but most of the original military records are found at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. We'll cover those records as well as those available from other sources.

The purpose of this web site is to direct you to the tools and information you need to find your Civil War ancestor and research his military service. We hope to do this by providing helpful and informative suggestions and recommendations, as well as a thorough overview of possible sources including:

  • A description of the most commonly used military records, along with information on some of the more obscure sources
  • Information on obtaining copies of records from the National Archives and other important repositories
  • Links to professional researchers
  • Information on related sources, i.e. books, newspapers, photos, and manuscripts
